3 Tips For Dealing With A Vehicle Breakdown On A Rural Road

If your car breaks down in a rural area, it's easy to feel like you are completely alone. This can be a very scary feeling, and you might not know how to handle it. This is a less than ideal situation to be in, but these tips can help you out.

1. Call a Towing Company

First of all, you will probably want to call a tow truck company as soon as you can if your car breaks down. If you're in a rural area, it might take a while for a tow truck driver to get to your location, so you'll need to call right away. If you're afraid that you are broken down in an area that is too far away, be aware that many tow truck drivers are willing to travel to help out their customers.

You might have trouble making a call if you're in a very remote location since you might not have a strong signal on your cell phone. You may find that getting out of your car and walking around in your immediate area -- while carefully watching out for cars and other dangers -- will help you find a spot where you have better cell phone reception. Make sure that you give the tow truck driver ample information about your location; after all, if your reception is spotty, you might not be able to receive a follow-up call from the towing company.

2. Make Sure Your Car's Off the Road

If you're in a rural area, you might not think that you have to worry about another car hitting your vehicle. However, drivers who regularly drive in the area might not be used to seeing other cars often, so they might not be looking for cars that are on the side of the road. Plus, if it's at night, drivers might not be able to see you on a dark country road. If possible, make sure that your car is pulled far enough off of the road so that it will not be hit by other drivers.

3. Make Sure You Can Be Seen

Again, it might be difficult for other drivers to see you and your car. If you have flares, consider lighting them so that you can be seen. You can also turn on the hazard lights on your vehicle. Not only will this help keep you safe, but it will also make it easier for the tow truck driver to see you, too.
